Top 10 Leading Causes of Death in the World

The World Health Organization’s list of the top 10 killers will be discussed in this article/video. These top ten deaths accounted for 55% of all deaths worldwide in 2019.

These causes are divided into three categories: communicable diseases such as infectious and parasitic diseases, and noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The last category includes injuries caused by accidents.

According to the WHO, the most common cause of death is non-communicable diseases. It’s seven out of 10 cases. Let’s discuss the reasons one by one.

#1 Ischemic Heart Disease

Ischemic Heart Disease explain

Ischemic heart disease is the world’s leading cause of death, accounting for 16% of all deaths. It is commonly referred to as a “heart attack.”

It happens due to a reduced blood supply to the heart muscle caused by the narrowing or obstruction of an artery that carries blood to the heart.

#2 Stroke

Stroke main 2 types

A stroke is caused by a sudden blockage or destruction of blood flow to the brain. Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability in the United States and worldwide. Every year, more than 5.2% of people in the U.S. and 11% of people worldwide die from stroke.

#3 Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a serious lung disease that can severely limit a person’s ability to breathe.

It is the third-leading cause of death in the world, accounting for approximately 6% of all deaths.

#4 Lower Respiratory Tract Infection

Lower Respiratory Tract Infection Pneumonia

Lower respiratory infections continued to be the fourth-most fatal communicable disease in the world. The most recent COVID-19 pandemic was the cause of the majority of pneumonia-related deaths in 2020 and 2021.

#5 Neonatal Conditions

Neonatal Conditions

Neonatal deaths are the deaths of babies younger than one-year-old. Neonatal conditions are the fifth leading cause of death. In 2019, 2 million infants and young children died as a result of these conditions.

#6 Trachea, Bronchus, and Lung Cancers

Trachea, Bronchus, and Lung Cancers stages

Cancer develops when cells do not die at the expected stage of their life cycle. If the body cannot control the spread of these cells, it will destroy essential functions and the structures of the body.

Lung cancers caused 1.8 million deaths in 2019 and are now ranked 6th among the leading causes of death.

#7 Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementia

Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementia

Alzheimer’s disease is a debilitating and ultimately fatal brain condition that results from the death of brain cells. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a group of conditions that affect memory, thinking, and behavior.

It is ranked as the 7th-leading cause of death. Women are more affected than men; it accounts for 65% of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related deaths.

#8 Diarrhoeal Diseases

Diarrhoeal Diseases

Diarrhea is a common problem caused by a variety of factors, including food poisoning, viral infections, and bacteria. It caused 1.5 million global deaths in 2019. Most of the time, low-social-economic countries are affected.

#9 Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes Mellitus complications

Diabetes is a long-term, noncommunicable illness with many complications. It happens due to a loss of the body’s ability to produce insulin. Most of the deaths occur due to complications that affect all of the organs in the body.
